2020 Hurricane Preparation Check List

Are you prepared for Hurricane Season?

Hurricanes are strong storms that cause life and property threatening hazards such as flooding, storm surge, high winds and tornadoes. Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane. UES Consultants has put together a useful checklist for all Floridians to use to be prepared for the 2020 Hurricane Season.

PLAN

an evacuation route well ahead of time.

In the case of having to evacuate a major storm you want to have an established assembly point. Keep your pets in mind for this plan, because you don’t want to leave them behind.

ENSURE

that no loose flying objects can break windows or glass doors.

– Cut weak branches and trees that could break and fall on your house.

– Make sure exterior doors are hurricane proof and have at least three hinges and a deadbolt lock that is at least one inch long.

– Sliding glass doors should be made of tempered glass, and during a storm should be covered with shutters or plywood.

– Windows should be covered with shutters or plywood.

– If you have a boat on a trailer, know how to anchor the trailer to the ground or house.

PREVENT

wind damage.

Wind coming into your home through an opening poses grave problems for the rest of your home, especially your roof.

– Replace old garage doors and tracks with a door that is approved for both wind pressure and impact protection.

– Seal the outside wall openings such as vents, outdoor electrical outlets, garden house bibs, and locations where cables or pipes go through the wall.

TAKE

an inventory of your personal property.

This will help insure you have enough home insurance to replace your personal possessions as well as speed up the claims process and substantiate losses for income tax purposes, and is helpful should you need to apply for disaster aid. In case of evacuation, this is an important list to keep with you.

PREPARE

emergency water, food and medicine supplies.

– Have at least 5 gallons of water per person.

– Have an extra gallon of water on hand for your pet.

– Gather clean containers for water.

– Get supplies to make your drinking water safe with iodine tablets or chlorine bleach.

– Learn how to safely store your water supply, and how to make your water safe for use.

– Put together a 3 to 5 day supply of food that does not go bad quickly.

– Make sure to have enough baby food or formula.

– Gather any prescription medications.

  •

GATHER

safety items and personal care products.

– First aid kit and instructions.

– Fire extinguisher.

– Battery powered radio
